Tips to Look after Your Teeth

During these uncertain times it is best to focus on what we can control as well as keeping well and healthy.

Many of us seek comfort in eating and drinking, but at the same time we must be mindful to keep up our healthy habits.

People visit a dentist only when required and avoid regular checkups

To help you protect your teeth, we have collated our five must follow tips

1) Clean your Teeth Well.

You should brush your teeth at least twice a day  for at least two minutes with toothpaste containing fluoride, as  fluoride is known to protect our teeth from cavities. However, you must  spitnot  rinse immediately after you have finished brushing , to avoid washingthe protective fluorideaway .

Dental floss too should be used regularly. One must use interdental brush or dental floss to remove plague, for cleaning in between our teeth.

Young kids should be regularly monitored , to check if they are brushing in a propermanner or not . Till the age of 7 years one parent of the child should monitor the brushing routine. Parents should check their children are brushing sticky food from their teeth especially before bedtime.

2) Treat flossing as important as brushing

Many who brush regularly neglect flossing.

Flossing stimulates the gums, reduces plaque, and  inflammation in the area.

Don’t let flossing difficulties stop you from flossing .

3) Don’t neglect your tongue

Plaque can also build up on your tongue Not only can this lead to bad breath but it can also lead to other dental issues. Gently brush your tongue.

4) Scale- back Sugar.

Food covered in sticky substances such as caramel can be incredibly damaging for teeth.

Such sugar laden sticky food then sticks to your teeth and can lead to tooth decay

The bacteria that lives in our mouthfeeds off the sticky residue , and produces acid that wears away tooth enamel .

From hot chocolate to honey glazed parsnips ,to chocolate cakes , temptation is at every corner . They are full of sugar which can increase the likelihood of tooth decay.

It’s not always the amount of sugar in your food and drink , but how often these are consumed .

Scaling down sweet food and beverages from your eating routine can extensively cut your danger for tooth cavities. We recommend keeping any sweet treats to mealtimesonly, and to be mindful to choose healthier options.

5)Quit Smoking.

Smoking increases  the danger of gum diseaseand is also linked to many other health issues. It also causes bone resorption.Smoking stains your teeth yellow and it also causes bad breath. Gethelp to quit smoking.

6)Eat crunchy fruits and vegetables

Ready to eat foods are convenient, but not healthy for our body as well as our teeth .

Fresh, crunchy fruits and veggies not only contain more healthy fibre , but are also a good choice for our oral health.

7) Stay hydrated

Water continues to be the best beverage for your overall health – including dental health. Weall know that we should drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water every day .Also, as rule of thumb we should drink water after every meal. This can help wash out some of the  stickyand acidic foods.

8) See Your Dentist at least twice a year

Everyday habits are crucial to your overall dental health . Still , even the most dutiful brushers and flossers need to see dentist regularly. Not only can a dentist remove calculus and look for cavities ,and take preventive approach to dental care , your dentist will also check for mouth cancer.Gum ( periodontal) disease remains prevalent despite being preventable. Left untreated , periodontitis ( severe gum disease) is a major cause of tooth loss, as well as being a risk factor for diabetes and heartdisease.
